Frequently Asked Questions
Who can be a member of YORNNA?
Any professional registered nurse whose one or both parents are of Yoruba ancestry
Should a membership applicant reside in a specific geographical location?
Yes, members of YORNNA are residents in the United States or Canada.
Is the aim of YORNNA similar to the aims of other ethnic Nursing organizations?
YORNNA is different from other ethnic Nursing organizations, because YORNNA members are volunteers whose focus is to assist people in the Yoruba community who have health challenges that cannot be addressed by the healthcare system at home (in SW Nigeria). YORNNA’s focus is not professional development of members, but the alleviation of sufferings of people who are less fortunate in the Yoruba community and the people who are incapable of meeting their individual welfare needs. YORNNA is also different from other ethnic Nursing organizations because YORNNA seeks to mentor nurses back home in Yoruba Land on the different advances in healthcare treatment modalities that can be easily adapted to the environment at home.
Does membership in YORNNA mean termination of one’s membership in other ethnic Nursing organizations?
No, membership in YORNNA does not translate to a termination of your membership in other ethnic Nursing Organizations because the objectives of all other organizations are different. They cannot meet the needs of YORNNA and vice versa; therefore, a member of YORNNA can still be a member of any other ethnic Nursing organizations. What is important is the individual's ability to meet their obligations in both organizations.
What is the purpose of YORNNA membership?
A member of YORNNA communes with colleagues for proficiencies in our cultural ideals, ethos, and values, in relations to the members’ professional prowess as a nurse and a frontliner in the promotion of health and wellbeing in the Yoruba community worldwide.
What are the obligations of a member of YORNNA?
A member of YORNNA is expected to satisfy financial, administrative, and humanitarian obligations. The financial obligations include a one-time $100 registration fee due at the time of application for membership, and $5 monthly, or $60 yearly contributions. Administrative obligation includes a 50% attendance at the quarterly association meetings. Humanitarian activities such as conducting free health screenings for early detection of diseases, and health promotion through education.
Is YORNNA a for-profit organization?
No, YORNNA is a voluntary organization of nurses who are willing to provide their services freely to assist others with health challenges to assuage sickness and promote wellness in our community here in North America and at home in Yoruba Land.
Is there a required professional qualification for membership eligibility?
Because of the levels of expertise that would be required to conduct several of our projects (such as health screening, health fairs, mentoring nurses in North American and at home), an applicant must be a Registered Professional Nurse (i.e., an RN) or higher education in the USA or Canada.
